You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

This morning I heard the first song from the cardinal. During my morning practice, there was a red headed woodpecker on the tulip tree. The starlings, grackles and chickadees had a noisy turf war over the old bread I put out for them on the back lawn. I feel calm.
The weekend went very well. I did some planning for my garden. I am NOT growing squash, green/red peppers, cucumber, or eggplant. They just don't do well. I am going to try for peas & beans this year as well as a whole box of leafy greens. It's very possible that I might try a box of root vegetables. Tomatoes, of course. Jalepenos & banana peppers, yes. Herbs, herbs, herbs!
I read a lot this weekend. My current books are: oneminutemillionaire (it's more leadership style than a how-to book so far), 1001 garden tricks (some interesting, low cost, funtional tips for garden issues), virgin earth by phillipa gregory (the journey of an englishman in the new colony of virginia), and the forgotten class (a treatise on the next to lowest stratum of the socio-politico-economic ladder). It's a nice mix.
I went for a muddy hike on Sunday afternoon.
I met my goal for the weekend in doing ab crunches; by this morning I was adding a few other exercises to stretch and strengthen my legs. I'm hoping to get to the gym 3x this week with

When was the last time you were at peace?
Right now? This morning? Last night? Yesterday? Last week? Last month? Last year? Can't remember?
Take a moment - right now! Breathe deep. Close your eyes. Take another breath. Hold it. Breathe out with noise. Shrug your shoulders. Breathe. Flex your hands. Breathe. Wiggle your toes. Breathe. Turn your thoughts inward. Turn your feelings inward. Listen to your breath. In. Out. Breathe.
Slowly, in your own time, breathe deeply and open your eyes. Return to the world at peace.
